Developing Effective Plumbing Training Programs

Working hard to create new training plans for the plumbing and heating apprenticeship standard with a gas or environmental technologies pathway.

The basis of the training plan is to make it clear for employers and apprentices just what, why and when will their employees be covering content during the practical training period. the first item that was looked at when redesigning the new training plan was the KSB’s for the v1.2 of the standard.

All of the duties for each element of the apprenticeship standard are featured above in the three images, with a QR code to the KSB’s linked to each duty. This assisted me in the development of the training plan for the core plumbing and both of the pathways.

The above video is a brief look at the layout of the training plan that will be transferred onto the platform for the apprentice and the employer to view and discuss with us if there are any changes or additions that they may wish to discuss.

Occupation summary

This occupation is found in the building services sector of the construction industry.

Plumbing & domestic heating technicians size and select, plan and install, service, maintain and commission plumbing and domestic heating systems.

All technicians will be required to work on typical plumbing elements such as hot and cold water systems and storage, supplies to dwellings and associated pipework, above-ground pipework, connection to below-ground, sanitary pipework, fittings and furniture. Appliances and equipment can include central heating boilers, bathroom furniture, sanitary appliances, drainage and rainwater systems. Further to that, technicians will specialise in one of three areas:

Domestic gas fired hot water heating appliances technician: installation and maintenance of domestic natural gas systems and central heating and hot water appliances.

Domestic air source heat pumps & solar thermal systems technician: installation and maintenance of air source heat pumps and solar thermal hot water systems in domestic premises.

There is a third option of Non Domestic plumbing however, we are not at present offering this pathway so it does not feature within our training plan.
